It’s true, you can use the common herb lemon balm for anxiety! Lemon balm has been used for centuries for its medicinal effects on mental health. The ancient Greeks knew of it’s medicinal properties and frequently prescribed it to those who were living with anxiety.
I remember reading about this amazing herb when I was ill a few years ago. I remember getting so anxious that my heart would be racing and pounding so fast it felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest. My palms were constantly sweating, I had racing thoughts and just an overwhelming sense of dread!
One day I remember getting to a point of feeling like I could just not sit with the anxiety any longer and thought I would try a more radical (in the modern world anyway) approach. I’d spent hours reading herbal medicine books and had been surprised to read just how effective lemon balm for anxiety can be! So I thought I would try it!
I ran into the garden where I knew some lemon was growing and I cut some off the plant. Unsure what to do with it, I remember reading about making herbal teas, so I just thought I would boil the kettle and infuse the lemon balm in boiling water. So I did and left it to cool down for 10 minutes or so.
At this point my anxiety was hitting it’s peak, so I took a few sips from the tea, and whoooah, I could not believe just how quickly and intensely the lemon balm began to calm me down! I can only describe the feeling as a heaviness coming over me and a calm.
I sat back in my chair and continued to sip my lemon balm tea. It continued to calm me down, so much so that I fell asleep. I was so relaxed and at peace.
This is where I picked up my passion for herbal remedies and natural health. I just could not believe how effective it was for me.
If you would like to try lemon balm for anxiety, then I do advise buying some lemon balm from a reputable garden centre who sell herbs. Then let the plant mature for a few months before you begin harvesting it. It smell beautiful too when you touch it, like lemon and mint.
