Learn about Anxiety
The more time you invest to learn about anxiety, the better equipped you are to manage it better. It might be that by reading some self help books related to your specific disorder, whether that be OCD, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, body dysmorphic disorder or social anxiety (this list is not exhaustive), the more you understand ‘the nature of the beast’ (as my CBT colleagues call it)!
Before I took the time to learn about anxiety and my specific disorder (OCD) I didn’t really understand everything I do now. So for instance…did you know the feelings of arousal and anxiety are pretty identical? Well yes, they are! Anxiety is a normal human function! It can be useful in certain circumstances as it motivates us to fight or flight, but it also is annoying when it gets out of hand 😉
Knowing your triggers
By understanding your disorder and yourself, you are able to identify your individual triggers for anxiety too. It might be that crowds are certain to exacerbate your anxiety, or closed spaces. It might even be being out in the open where no-one is around.
